RCMP Advisory board
The Parrsboro RCMP Advisory Board was established in early 2008 and held its first meeting on the 5th of March.
The Function of the Advisory Board is to "provide advice to the Town Council in relation to the enforcement of law, the maintenance of law and order and the prevention of crime in Parrsboro and area." (Nova Scotia Police Act).
The Police Advisory Board assists the Town Council, the RCMP and the
Community through:
- Community consultation
- Liaison with the RCMP District Commander and the RCMP Parrsboro Team Leader
- Identifying community policing issues
- Advising, in consultation with the District Commander, the setting of long-term community and district policing priorities
The Board consists of five members:
- Two members of the Town Council, appointed by the Council
- Two members of the community, appointed by the Council
- One member appointed by the Minister of Justice
Also attending Board meetings:
- The District RCMP Commander
- The Parrsboro and Area RCMP Team Leader
- TheTown Chief Administrative Officer (ex officio)
- The Board meets regularly. These meetings are open to the public
- All members of the Board completed the required training for their positions.
- While the current Board is still in the formative stage, it is already clear that it can serve a useful purpose to the community.
- Through active consultation with the Community, the Town Council and the RCMP, it acts as a bridge with all concerned about policing services in Parrsboro.
- It is stressed that the Board and its members have no operational policing authority and will not interfere in operational decisions and responsibilities, nor with day-to-day operations of the RCMP in our community.
- Through the broad consultation process, one of the Board's primary functions is to assist in setting longer-term policing priorities and programs for the community.
- The Board does not deal with specific complaints, but will take all policing and crime issues into consideration when setting longer-term policing priorities.
