Heritage Homes

In August 1982, the Town of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, adopted a Heritage Property Bylaw, empowering it to designate specific buildings, streetscapes, or areas of the Town, proven to be historically important. This designation gives the Town some measure of control over substantial alterations or demolition of the properties, thereby protecting the historical character of the community.

Selection Criteria for Heritage Properties are:

  1. Age
  2. Condition
  3. Relationship to Surrounding Area
  4. Architectural Merit
  5. Historicity

Since the adoption of the Heritage Bylaw, the Town Council has designated four properties as Municipal Heritage Properties. They are:

Property Location Date Designated
Old Post Office 168 Main Street June 5, 1986
Civic Building 4030 Eastern Ave. September 28, 1987
St. George's Anglican Church 216 Main Street September 28, 1987
Ottawa House 1155 Whitehall Rd. June 22, 1992

Heritage Homes and History Book

As a Centennial project in 1989 to celebrate 100 years of incorporation as a Town, a special book was created locally by the Centennial Committee. The book contains over 400 pages and the first 50 pages cover history of the Town and the balance gives a tour of the older homes. This book sold out and was in great demand. In late December 2001, a reprint of the original arrived from the publisher and is available through the Town Office. For those researching ancestors, etc., it is a very valuable tool. A lot of trivia is included. It is a collectors' book and may be sold out again quickly. Order your copy soon.
