Jail House Rocks! with Hans Durstling.  3 days of Lapidary Workshops in the Old Parrsboro Jail (behind Town Hall). 

Friday, August 19

10am-noon - Working with Sterling Silver - Watch a silver ring being made, step by tep with each step explained, silver soldering included. If you're thinking of working in sterling silver, here you'll get a firm base to start from.

1pm-3pm - Intro to cab cutting - Watch as an agate cabochon is cut and polished with all steps explained.  We'll also address a few fine points - dopping for example, and some of the little details that go into making a saleable stone.

7pm-9pm- The Home-Build Cab machine - We'll build a low cost but highly effective falt disc cab machine from mostly scrap yard parts, including custom making and shaping your own discs and sanding pads.  An excellent overview of how to build your own.

Saturday, August 20

10am-noon-Carving and Carving Tools - The irregular shapes encountered in carving often require custom shaped tools.  With ingenuity and diamond grit you can transform nails, barbeque skewers, copper wire and other household materials into custom tools that exactly fit the shape you need.  This session will show you how.  Very useful in cutting opal.

1pm-3pm - PROGRAM CHANGE - Was faceting, how changed to - Working with Sterling Silver. Learn the theory and working characteristics of sterling silver as a ring is made, step by step, and each step is explained, how and why.  If you're thinking of working in sterling, here you'll get a firm base to start jewellry-making on your own.

7pm-9pm - Making tools with Diamond - Core drills, polishing pads, grinding wheels, carving tools - you can make them all.  With diamond grit, blue jeans cloth, and a tube of epoxy, you can make or recharge a grinding or sanding lap.  It's cheap and highly useful.  This session will demonstrate some of the many toolmaking possibilities.

Starry, Starry Night

Time:  This is a night event.  We will meet at 9:00pm at the Fundy Geological Museum

Place:  We will travel by car caravan to Partridge Island to escape the bright lights and gain an unobstructed viewpoint.

What we will do:  On the very day that NASA's Juno spacecraft is scheduled to make its first very close approach to Jupiter, we will be gazing into the universe to locate various constellations and hear the Greek legends associated with them.

Length of event:  1 hour
